CEO Corner

As I begin to transition, every day I find myself having those moments with our staff, but most importantly our kids that I know I will never have again.  Just yesterday, I sat on a bench under a tree as the sun beamed down watching our Trinity Unit Director leading group activities on the lawn.  I watched and listened to the sheer excitement of what we adults would consider such a simple game (Mother May I, or Ms. Trina May I rather).  I had a couple of kids on the bench around me and even though they couldn’t participate due to being in time out, they were having just as much fun watching their friends and I’m sure this motivated them to not do whatever it was they did to have to sit out this time around.

The day before that, I had the pleasure of participating in our official Ribbon Cutting of our Logan-Blake Unit and I heard over and over how proud I must be of the facility and the legacy I am leaving. Quite honestly, I am.  We’ve grown a lot over my time here and I will always have moments like that to look back on, but nothing will stick out more than the hugs I got from members that day, since they don’t get to see and interact with me every day.  I got the same feeling while visiting Trinity. I also get the same from our teens too and that’s what I will remember the most.  The impact I’ve had on our kids, but most importantly the impact they have had on me.

I hope the hugs continue as I see them out and about, at BGCS events, at graduations, and even hopefully at Sandhills Community College!  I hope I’ve done all I could to make their experience here at the Club better and to make their lives and future better!

Meet Carter

One of Carter's biggest challenges has been learning self-control. With the help of his group leader, Carter has built a solid foundation for acknowledging and expressing emotions. Recently, Carter was upset, but before he lashed out, he said, "I'm going to step aside from the classroom so that I can come back when I'm ready." The group clapped for him, and his mood instantly changed.
The Boys & Girls Club of the Sandhills empowers our young people to support and influence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, and develop a positive self-image.
Staff Spotlight
Meet Mrs. Debbie

When you think of Debbie Zimmerman, three things come to mind: her smile; her willingness to step into whatever role is needed, be it the front desk, bus duty, or cooking; and her love for children.

Debbie is our Director of Programs. She has been with BGCS for over eight years and with the movement for 11 years. As Debbie puts it, "there is never a dull moment here!" She enjoys seeing how children view things. Whenever she's not at the Club, Debbie spends time with her family, including her four children and two grandkids.
Sponsor A Child, Change a Life!
Many of our Club families need financial assistance to cover the cost of Club membership. YOUR gift of $1,179.97 (or $98/month) sponsors ONE child for the entire school year and summer. With this help, members gain access to:
  • Academic Support - At the Club, kids receive homework help and tutoring to put them on the path to excellence in the classroom and beyond!
  • Healthy Meals - Oftentimes, the meals kids receive at the Club - dinner during the school year; breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the summer - are the only hot meals they have all day.
  • Encouragement, Sense of Purpose - Club kids receive the nurturing and support that so many desperately need. Our trained youth development professionals offer educational assistance, formative guidance, and leadership skills necessary for kids to reach their full potential as productive, caring members of our community.

You can help change a life by Sponsoring A Child! Monthly options are available, too!

Thanks to your generous support, we have 200 Club members sponsored!
What's Happening at The Club
Our kids from the Trinity Unit stopped by Brookdale Senior Living in Pinehurst with handmade cards for the residents.

We had a great turnout for the ribbon cutting ceremony at our Logan-Blake Unit with the Moore County Chamber of Commerce. Many thanks to the parents, board members, staff, and friends who joined us for the celebration!  All of the kids did a fantastic job entertaining all in attendance.
Thanks to Our Community!
Thanks to the generous support of the membership, sponsors, and the wonderful community, the Great Futures at Pinewild Golf Tournament presented by Lin Hutaff's Pinehurst Realty Group raised just over $50,000! THANK YOU!
Dr. Brewington commented, “The Pinewild tournament was a huge success and ensures our ability to serve more kids, more often, with greater impact.  However, what stands out the most for me at the event is the genuine love and support of our Club from the start to finish of this event.  The staff, members, and guests, all genuinely cared about our organization.  The highlight, of course, was seeing all of players and volunteers interacting with our Club teens”.

Regular attendance helps our teens in lots of ways! Teens who attend the Club regularly throughout the week are able to participate in the Food Truck Fun on Fridays. Club parents, connect with Mr. Germann for details on how your teen can take advantage of Food Truck Friday. Special thanks to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina for underwriting the program.
